Sequentia Legenda's album ETHEREAL under the magnifying glass of El Jice

Three questions about Elevation and ETHEREAL

Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

MY REPRESENTATION OF THE COSMOS

El Jice:
"Is Elevation inspired by the NDEs?
The dark colouring evokes the first steps of the soul in the afterlife.
More precisely in the first strata of the astral journey.
"

Sequentia Legenda:

"It's a surprising and interesting approach to my title.

Elevation, is my representation of the cosmos, of the sidereal and astral journey, the song of the High - the universe through its sounds.

For this composition, my wish and my objective were to build a broad, large, deep sound universe. By exploring new technical means and looking for new paths this title was really an exciting experiment.

The slow progression of the introduction is made up of low harmonics, dissonances, multiple reflections, are made to transport the listener to the diffuse, deep and orchestral singing of the universe as I can imagine it. For this opening, the use of an unusually long reverberation time accentuates the effect of size, while maintaining a low density of notes propagating in space. The stereophonic space in correlation with the extreme reverberations is deliberately accentuated to "stretch" the effect of grandeur even further and to somehow "suck" the listener upwards.
I would describe the overall atmosphere as "serious", gradually unfolding with subtle and hypnotic loops towards a more luminous atmosphere.

In the end, with Elevation, I took the initiative to add an additional facet to my musical vision by taking the risk of going beyond my usual guidelines, favouring a tendency to experiment. This title is certainly not the most accessible of my discography. To appreciate it, to explore it, you have to give yourself the necessary time, put yourself in good conditions to fully enjoy it, immerse yourself in this atmosphere in an optimal way and make the desired journey serenely and thus reach a certain fullness.
"

AN ALTERNATIVE MUSICAL MOVEMENT

El Jice:
"Overall, I felt the album to be disturbing and dark, although it was one of my favourites. Was it an aspect of Berlin School that caught your attention? Or is it a reflection of a current state of mind?"

Sequentia Legenda:

"The ETHEREAL album is a mixture of "seriousness", sensitivity and nostalgia. When I compose, I am in my bubble, I work alone, varying rigour and freedom - perhaps I am influenced by the German rigour I encounter daily ;-) I am unable to make "commercial" music, mainstream soup, mass music.

If I had to define my music, I would say that it is serious, nostalgic, sincere, that it is against the grain of what is being done and that I am proud of it. This is how I see the Berlin School, as an alternative musical movement, that we must take the trouble to look for in order to appreciate all its magnificence.
"

THREE CELESTIAL SPACES

El Jice:
"Is ETHEREAL the contraction of Ether and Real, an evocation of the reality of the invisible world in our existence? In fact, is it a conceptual album about the afterlife or the coexistence of the two worlds?"

Sequentia Legenda:

"ETHEREAL is vaporous, ethereal, aerial, it is a symbolism between reality and imagination, an immersion, an introspection. It is a minimalist, ethereal and organic sound universe, made up of three celestial spaces to discover: Stratums of Seraphic Voices, Around the Second Moon and Elevation. The musical framework, structure and sounds are refined with a continuous process of transformation over time.

The ether and also the substance of the soul. It is precisely music that comes from the depths of my heart and soul. And if, like the ether, this subtle and volatile substance, ETHEREAL is a creator of effects, sensations, reactions on the body and the psyche, then my bet is won!
"

A return on the title VIBRATIONS

A RETROSPECTIVE ON MY TITLE VIBRATIONS
"He swims and whirls"

Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

CRYSTAL LOOPS AND VIBRATORY WAVES

It is indeed a very precise part of FLY OVER ME which served as starting point.
The atmosphere consists essentially of crystal loops which move,
oscillating like vibratory waves.
The chords in the B minor tone, as well as the basses, support the sequences that give the cadence. Here, not percussion, but a few voices mingle with the whole.

THE HEART OF THESE TWO UNIVERSES

"We remember these delicate arpeggios which rang at Crystal Lake's opening?
We remember this second draft of Mirage in Big in Japan?

The introduction of VIBRATIONS plunges us right in the heart of these two universes. We could downright speak about plagiarism if the track didn't sneak between both variations of FLY OVER ME and THE APPROACH. The execution is the same, only the ambiences differ. Here the synth pads always caress so warmly this delicate electronic staccato which amplifies its measure with as much subtlety as delicacy, whilst electronic chirpings of the beautiful Schulze's analog years come to peck at our ears and to awake soft memories of a time that will always stay in the firmament of the unconditional charms of EM. The proof? This wonderful obsession which surrounds the Sequentia Legenda phenomenon who, with an approach so candid, manages to put between our ears a thing for which we would never have hoped.

Three monuments of EM with variations on the same theme, BLUE DREAM is to the 2010's what Mirage was in the 80's."

A COMPLEX STRUCTURE OF SOUND

"Most space music is made of three components: synth pads, sequencer loops and solos (which can sometimes be too flashy and protruding). Sequentia Legenda is intelligent and sensitive enough to create his instrumental music with a perfect blend of the first two components only: pads and loops. In his spacey compositions, where light meets minimalism, and fitted to dream and meditation, there is no room for flashy solo, no room for protruding showing-off. Instead the space is filled with highly sophisticated perpetually changing pads and ever-evolving patterns of loops, creating a complex structure of sound."

MONUMENTAL TRIBUTE TO BERLIN SCHOOL LEGENDS

"[...]VIBRATIONS fires up the spectacle with its extended version. As far I remember, shorter edition of this composition was my fave piece on BLUE DREAM album. Persistently shimmering ear-tickling sequences exquisitely commingle with sublimely sweeping horizons and remotely percolating and oscillating cybernetic glimpses. Although without any significant modifications when comparing to the original version, it's still a truly triumphant piece paying monumental tribute to Berlin School legends.[...]"

Sequentia Legenda Interview by Martin De La Woods

Sequentia Legenda Interview

Sequentia Legenda Synthfest 2016 Nantes
Sequentia Legenda Synthfest 2016 Nantes

You have made it no secret that your music reflects the Berlin School sound especially the productions of Klaus Schulze. When did you first come across this form of music and why do you prefer to emulate this style rather than other genres?

SL: "The comparison with Klaus Schulze is often referred to, which quite satisfies me.
Klaus Schulze
was a pioneer with a new musical approach. I appreciate his work. He is without any doubt one of the symbolic figures of Berliner Schule, and he has been a true revelation for me.

It all started while listening to Klaus Schulze's 'Mirage' album, when I was fifteen. I instantly fell in love with this music. That's how my passion for Berlin School developed. I then began to play on synthesizers.

Cosmic Music is a passion. It's a true delight for me to compose and my mind is out of this world during a composition session. I like to share my emotions in my music, give a little bit of dream, allow the listener to relax and escape this world in turmoil where everything goes too fast and where standardization reigns."

Considering the size of the synthesizers and the complexity of creating a basic pattern in the 70's the time saving of soft synths is probably no more applicable than here. To re-create the style do you use hardware, soft synths or a combination of the two?

I first owned a number of analogic synthesizers (ARP Odyssey, Korg PS3200, Polymoog, MS20 Korg + SQ10, Crumar Multimans S, Oberheim Two Voices). Then, when MIDI burst out, I purchased a few digital machines (DSS1 Korg, TG77 Yamaha, D110 Roland, KM1 Kawai, Microwave Waldorf, JD800 Roland). And now, I got only virtual synthesizers.

SL: "The Arturia V Collection is a working tool I often use and the Minimoog V is without a doubt one of my favourite VSTs. After collecting many hardware synthesizers, my current compositions are now built with VSTs. I might buy hardware material again in the future though, especially if I have to deal with stage performance."

Your track 'AU REVOIR' appeared on the compilation album 'Legacy and Evolution: A tribute to Edgar Froese' what did it mean to you to be a part of this tribute to the man who stayed with Tangerine Dream through various changes in the line up till his demise?

SL: "I was honoured and fortunate enough to have Rebekka Hilgraves propose me to be part of her project dedicated to the memory of Edgar Froese. Her project was almost over when I was approached and I had only a few weeks left to get to the final version of the composition that was to become 'AU REVOIR'.

I felt the urge to pay a tribute to one of the forerunners of Berliner Schule. Edgar Froese was instrumental in the development of electronic music. Many thanks to him."
