THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE
relive the emotion and energy of this unique concert

Preparation and Planning:
After our concert in the Netherlands, the enthusiasm of our listeners quickly pushed us to plan this DVD project. With seriousness and passion, I threw myself into the task spontaneously. The selection of titles was clear in my mind: present the three main tracks, then add exclusive facets in the form of bonuses.

The main challenge was to recreate the sound and visual atmosphere of the concert. I used video recordings from four cameras, and my warmest thanks go to Enrico Corsano for his high-quality work. For the sound, in addition to the camera recordings, I used the sound recordings from the mixing desk made by Ron Boots, whom I would also like to thank. I reworked the soundtrack individually to highlight certain passages and correct certain frequencies and levels, in order to deliver good listening quality while retaining the typical character of a live performance.

There were a few problems during the concert, particularly during the first track when Tommy's headphones broke down. I didn't want to over-correct these imperfections, because they're part and parcel of playing live and the technical risks involved. For the image, I worked with the ‘multiple camera’ technique, making the most of Enrico's four video sources. Some corrections (sharpness, luminosity) were made to provide an appropriate and pleasant visual experience.

This project has been an incredible adventure, and I hope that the DVD will enable viewers to relive the emotion and energy of this unique concert.

THE IDEA FOR THE DVD
the passion and energy I felt at the concert

Video Editing :
The DVD's home page consists of four menus: three for the titles and one for the bonus. The bonus, which is mainly informative, is made up of various video sources, such as cameras and smartphones, from different people. English subtitles have been included for this bonus. As for the format, I opted for the PAL standard.

Context of the concert:
The concert in the Netherlands was a highlight for Tommy and myself. It was an opportunity to share our vision of the Berlin School with an enthusiastic audience of connoisseurs. It was also an opportunity to perform live (something we hadn't done since 2019) and to highlight our presence on the international scene. Ron Boots had been in touch with me on several occasions, and finally things came together at the end of 2023 to culminate in this concert.

Inspiration for the DVD:

The idea for the DVD came from the passion and energy I felt at the concert. The positive feedback from fans and Tommy's encouragement motivated me to immortalise this unique experience and share it with a wider audience. We wanted to give our listeners a tangible memory of this memorable evening, while revealing what goes on behind the scenes of our work.

Choice of tracks:
I selected the three tracks from the concert for this DVD in order to preserve the full ambience of the event. They represent the essence of our musical style on stage. The exclusive bonus adds an extra dimension, allowing fans to discover previously unseen aspects of our music and creative process.

Graphic design:
As well as the music and video, I was also responsible for the graphic design of the project. I designed the Digipack cover and the 4-page booklet myself. This allowed me to ensure that the visual aesthetic perfectly reflected the spirit of the concert.

The "shared" interview with Stéphane Rousset

Here is the first of the series of "shared" interviews.
It is Stéphane Rousset who inaugurates this new section,
he is the one who had the idea of semi-cryptic questions
consisting of one word or a very short sentence.

Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

Sequentia Legenda: Spirituality?

Stéphane Rousset: I respect those for whom this is central, but I must confess to being ignorant and a tad insensitive in this matter: I do not practice meditation, and I am neither religious nor mystical. I'm quite rational and analytical, like "if it's not measurable, it doesn't exist"! But then, since we're in a musical context, how do I explain the emotions that certain pieces of music evoke in me? I'm not talking about nice little emotions like choruses of ditties that we enjoy humming; I'm talking about really strong emotions, I'm talking about crying when listening to certain crescendos, certain passages, even certain chords. Is it similar to mystical ecstasy, is it a kind of trance? I'm also talking about more serene emotions, those that slow progressions or harmonically rich layers carry within them; AU REVOIR is a perfect example, THE APPROACH too (the layers behind the sequences), Bayreuth Return by Klaus Schulze too.

Problem: none of this is measurable. And yet, I know it and I live it, therefore it exists. Mmm...

Sequentia Legenda: Nature?

Stéphane Rousset: I may be a city boy, I may not know when the beetroot is harvested, but I know and feel the beauty of nature. I can sit on a stone wall in the vineyards of Lavaux, with Lake Geneva below and the Alps in front, and simply soak up this absolute beauty. I can gaze at the Aletsch glacier, doing nothing but feeling its majesty. At the same time, I am deeply saddened to see glaciers disappearing; I am deeply concerned about our blindness as a human species to the climate collapse that is upon us; if I had depressive tendencies, I would be in the deep end. So yes, I've stopped flying since 2018, I've sold my car, I've almost become a vegetarian, I recycle in every sense, and all this without any problem, but the bigger issue is elsewhere: what are we doing about the daily criminal acts of the fossil fuel industry? What are we doing about the fact that our governments are not treating the climate emergency as an emergency?

“And what about music?”, you might ask. Ah yes, well, you didn't know what the word nature would trigger in me...! But if your synths all run on electricity from renewable sources, Sequentia Legenda's music will be all the more in tune with the Universe.

Sequentia Legenda: Trains?

Stéphane Rousset: I have always loved riding trains. I can still hear the clackety-clack of the wheels on the unwelded rails of my childhood. And then between Paris and Lausanne, there was the Trans-Europ-Express, so, ten years later, a Kraftwerk connection (even if my discovery was earlier, with Autobahn).

But I think it was above all this clackety-clack that taught me about sequences, about superimposed loops; because there was not only the clackety-clack of one bogie, there were those of the neighbouring bogies, which were necessarily out of sync and of different tonalities. In short, car bogies were the ancestors of sequencers! And my imagination embroidered on it, grafted loops that didn't exist, added a mellotronic melodic topping, the whole thing evolving in slow motion, in line with the length of the journey.

Are we far from the infinities of space?
Are we far from Berlin? Not so sure.

About Stéphane Rousset: Hello, my name is Stéphane, I live in Lausanne, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, on the banks of Lake Geneva and opposite the mountains of Haute-Savoie (French Alps). I was born here (a long time ago... 67 years ago), it's my home, even if I did my primary school in Paris and three years of university in the USA. I learned physics in Switzerland, electricity and computer science in California, and then I "made a career" in the ICT (information and communication technology) industry, climbing the ladder, and adding three beautiful, now grown-up children to humankind with my wife.

My priority now, my absolute priority, is the fight for the climate emergency, without forgetting my grandson (fifteen months old), of whom I am completely gaga. Climate change is serious, I don't want my mother, my grandson, my relatives to die prematurely during a forty-degree heat wave. But we are driving at 100 km/h into the wall, and it is a hundred metres away (for you Americans, that’s driving at about 60 mph towards a wall 300 feet in front of us). So I act, I really dedicate myself to it.

Music gives me strength, intense emotions and balance, and has done so since I was a teenager. The list of influences would be very long, but without thinking I would say Magma, Crimson, Glass, Stravinsky, Can, Schulze, Floyd, Genesis, Zeppelin, Portishead, Gainsbarre, ah I'm told that I'm running out of time. But I won't be prevented from mentioning Sequentia Legenda, which bathes me almost daily. Thank you to La Planète Bleue / the Blue Planet radio show (one broadcast in 2015)... And thank you to Laurent for enriching the Berlin School in this way, even now.

Beyond the stars Berlin School music

Stéphane Rousset: The place that inspires you?

Sequentia Legenda: For me, nature is the place of all inspirations, allowing me to develop my ideas, to vivify my creativity. Walks amid Mother Nature give me happiness, relaxation and a chance to recharge my batteries. It is a pleasure to hear the rustling of leaves in the wind, to listen to the many birdsongs, to be able to soak up the soothing murmur of a stream, or simply to revel in the timeless purity of silence.

I also like to regenerate and find inspiration in trees and rocks. For example, one of my favourite places is the Taennchel massif, a highly vibratory place not far from my home.

Nature is an invaluable source of kindness and creativity.

Stéphane Rousset: La Planète Bleue (The Blue Planet)?

Sequentia Legenda: La Planète Bleue is an interesting radio programme that is broadcast all over the world and which, in my opinion, is worth a visit. For many years, it has been feeding listeners with a rich and wide range of music, as well as with carefully selected articles. Yves Blanc selects and writes the content of his programmes with great care to offer a qualitative and constantly evolving programme.

As far as my music is concerned, it has been played regularly on this programme, notably at the conclusion of the 999th broadcast with SOLITUDES LUNAIRES (Lunar Solitudes), for which I am infinitely grateful. Yves Blanc also presented a preview of the double album EXTENDED (http://sequentia-legenda.blogspot.com/2017/04/yves-blanc-presente-extended-dans-son.html). Moreover, being present on the collector's CD "La Planète Bleue Volume 9" (The Blue Planet, volume 9) with my track VIBRATIONS was a great consecration for me. It was a pleasure to meet Yves and to discuss with him about music of course, but also about many other subjects.

I take this opportunity to share an article from the luminous pen of Yves Blanc: "Almost all soaring music is made up of three elements: synth layers, sequencer loops... and solos... often very boring, I must admit. Sequentia Legenda has the intelligence and sensitivity to build its music - strictly instrumental - on the first two elements only: the layers and the loops. In his compositions, no dripping solo, no boring solo, but layers of great sophistication, in constant evolution, and loops, also in permanent evolution, sometimes of great complexity, even if they always have the appearance of the obvious.
"

Stéphane Rousset: Wahnfried or Crystal Lake?

Sequentia Legenda: Without any hesitation: Crystal Lake!
Crystal Lake really means a lot to me. This timeless track by Klaus Schulze was a real revelation, I fell in love with the Berlin School. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my late mother, who allowed me to discover this mythical album of Klaus Schulze, "Mirage". I was about fifteen years old at that time, and I had also discovered new and fascinating instruments for me: synthesizers and sequencers.

I can't count the number of times I have been lifted by the unique and intoxicating atmosphere of Crystal Lake, to experience extraordinary and imaginary journeys. Even today, I still enjoy this universe and I always discover new subtleties. I never tire of it, it is timeless, my whole being is transformed when I listen to it. Looking back, I can say that in addition to the instrumental textures and other sumptuous sonic facets, it was the high precision work of the sequences that fascinated me. The loops generated by the sequencers simply mesmerised me!

And if I were to leave one day for a desert island or another planet and could only take one album with me, it would be Mirage, without any hesitation.

I would like to take this opportunity to share an article that appeared on my Blog:
https://sequentia-legenda.blogspot.com/2017/06/mirage-my-musical-love-at-first-sight.html

I thank Stéphane for this beautiful exchange.

Sequentia Legenda cinq performances en 2019

2019 une année dense et riche

Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

Sandrine Crot a posé quelques questions à Sequentia Legenda 🎤
Sandrine Crot : « Que signifie pour vous Sequentia Legenda ? »

Bruno Weihs a posé quelques questions à Sequentia Legenda 🎤

Olivier Borgeaud a posé quelques questions à Sequentia Legenda 🎤

Sequentia Legenda five performances in 2019

2019 a dense and rich year

Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

THE YEAR 2019 WAS FOR ME DENSE AND RICH

The year 2019 was for me dense and rich with five stage performances. It was in Switzerland in Founex that the first concert took place, then in France in Nantes, in Germany twice in Tübingen and Solingen, to finish again in Switzerland, more precisely at the Caveau du Cœur d'Or in Chexbres.

THE LAST CONCERT OF THE 2019 TOUR

The warm welcome and the flawless Swiss organization made us feel comfortable and confident. All the members of the Caveau du Cœur d'Or, Swiss Vintage and Musik Asylum team contributed to an exemplary setting in a friendly and original setting. The sound system in the vault was handled in an exemplary manner by Nicolas Picciotto. After the soundcheck, the adjustments of the lighting control room, the decoration and installation of the room, the doors of the vault were opened shortly before 7pm. After the presentation by the kind Selim Keddar, Tommy and I were able to sit behind our instruments. I took the floor to thank all the organizers, to greet the audience and to present my musical vision and the progress of the concert. This one started at 9:10 pm.

It was in a friendly atmosphere that we were able to perform. We were very pleased with the support provided by the auditors. The first two tracks "THE APPROACH" and "THE RETURN" gave way to a short break. The third track "AU REVOIR" closed this beautiful cosmic evening.

"I IMMEDIATELY ENTERED YOUR MUSICAL UNIVERSE"

How did you hear about the concert?
Sandrine Crot: "I am a member of the committee of the Association L'Accroch'Coeur which manages the vault of the Coeur d'Or de Chexbres, so this concert was immediately included in my agenda, because as soon as I heard about it, I went to listen to some songs on the internet, my senses were touched and I had to be there to listen to you live!"

What motivated you to come?
Sandrine Crot: "I am very new to electronic music and I am getting to know these different sounds that capture me very easily, I am more and more open and curious to this type of music. Your performance was my first live concert of electronic music, what could be more wonderful than to experience this with you."

How did you feel during this performance?
Sandrine Crot: "I immediately entered your musical universe and you both carried me away, on the one hand by the energy you share with great generosity and on the other hand, by the finesse of the sounds you produce. The concert was of a high quality, both human and musical, you both have something contemplative and very aesthetic. In short, when the concert is over, we only want one thing: to keep it going for many hours. THANK YOU!"
Sandrine Crot kindly asked Sequentia Legenda four questions 🎤
Sandrine Crot: "What does Sequentia Legenda mean to you?"
Sequentia Legenda: "Five years ago, when I decided to put my music in daylight, I was looking for a stage name. I had two long lists of names. And finally, it was an assemblage of two names, figuring on each of them, that would give my artist name. It's Latin. Sequentia related to the sequence, suite, succession and Legenda for legend and which can be defined as an imaginary narrative. So it is finally a marriage between note sequences and the imaginary ;-) They are also my initials."

Sandrine Crot: "How do you feel during your musical performances?"
Sequentia Legenda: "I feel a mixture of nervousness and excitement, I guess that's normal. Going on stage is always a new experience and will remain unique in itself. The technical aspect is always a new challenge, with this unpredictability that will give a specific cachet to the concert. I appreciate this meeting with the listeners, this moment of communion."

Sandrine Crot:
"
What are your sources of inspiration?"
Sequentia Legenda: "Mysticism, science or spirituality are for me sources of inspiration. An image, a story, a sound. I like to imagine notes, sequences, an atmosphere - a musical colour. Walking in the forest with my children, for example, will stimulate my creative sphere. Inspiration is a state of mind. I don't calculate, I let it come, I let myself go to live my creativity to the full."

Sandrine Crot: "What are your most important influences and electro references?"
Sequentia Legenda: "I wouldn't beat around the bush for long: my reference will always remain Klaus Schulze and more precisely his extraordinary album Mirage. This album alone was my real musical trigger!
Second, the mythical group Tangerine Dream is also one of my references, ahead of Vangelis, Kraftwerk or Jean-Michel Jarre."

"I WAS IMMEDIATELY CAPTIVATED AND ALSO CHARMED"

How did you hear about the concert?
Bruno Weihs: "Through an newsletter announcement from Sequentia Legenda."

What motivated you to come?
Bruno Weihs: "To experience a live electronic music concert (a first for me) and possibly also get to know the artist I have been for a long time."

How did you feel during this performance?
Bruno Weihs: "I was immediately captivated, and also charmed by the contribution of the drummer on stage too. Time has passed so quickly! A beautiful show."
Bruno Weihs kindly asked Sequentia Legenda two questions 🎤
Bruno Weihs: "In the concert you gave with Tommy, I was surprised by the intensity of the energy I felt, much more than what I experienced in front of my speakers or with headphones. Do you think that the concert is the best way to share this musical game of voices and effects that you have composed?"
Sequentia Legenda: "Glad to know that you felt the energy of the concert.
Working in a Home studio and Live are two very different things. When I compose at home, I'm in my bubble if I can say so. When I perform on stage, I am in contact with the audience. The sharing of emotions is then done in a direct way and the reciprocity between the artist and the listener is palpable. It's a unique moment. What is important for me is to share my sensitivity with the audience present. Finally, it is our evening together, our communion around a common theme."

Bruno Weihs: "I find that the name given to your genre of music, namely the "ambient" style, masks a little the more universal resonance that your music has with life, and more broadly with the spontaneity of creation that characterizes the world around us. What do you feel when you make a composition, where it comes from and what kind of experience it will convey when it vibrates when it comes out of your machine instrument or when reproducing a recording?"
Sequentia Legenda: "During the creation phase, I feel excitement, passion and I don't see time passing. The result of this phase of composition is a part of me that I deliver to the public. It is my emotions and sensitivity that I transmit through my sound worlds. My musical vision is against the current trend and I am proud of it. I do not subscribe to this mass diffusion, to this "soup" of sound that we are given to hear on a large number of radio stations. The Berlin School is a niche and I want to give the best of myself to honour this beautiful musical movement. For me, it is important to share my own musical vision with passion and sincerity."

"YOU ARE AMAZED, DIZZY AND TRANSPORTED"

How did you hear about the concert?
Olivier Borgeaud: "I saw by chance the announcement of the concert on tempslibre.ch, the site of the Agenda Culturel Romand."

What motivated you to come?
Olivier Borgeaud: "I am passionate about the electronic scene that I have been following attentively for several years, and even if it is true that I am more oriented towards (much) more minimalist styles - that of the Berlin school - listening to an electro concert in a jazz vault seemed a little offbeat, but nevertheless interesting."

How did you feel during this performance?
Olivier Borgeaud: "Quickly out of my comfort zone, I was immersed in a style that was not highly energetic, wrapped me in a dreamlike cocoon of the most subtle, dispensing me from trying to escape. For me who am usually above 110 BPM, it was a hell of a ride! I was here and now, the past and the future had lost their importance, I enjoyed the present moment. I liked the purity of tone, but above all its complexity. In a concert, you are amazed, dizzy and transported. I can easily imagine that if you listen to these songs several times, the journey must be different each time as their music distils a vast expanse of unknown lands. I liked Tommy Betzler's rhythm; it seems essential to me, a little like the stones thrown into the forest to mark his trail. He plays the role of guide, so as not to lose his way and thus better mark the gap between the dream and reality. The last song played "AU REVOIR", touched me. The emotion was sincere, and an authentic Link was definitely woven with the audience. I liked the intimate atmosphere that reigned in the Caveau au Cœur d'Or, which I was also discovering for the first time; if you are looking for an authentic place where the Client and the Artist are at the heart of the staff's concerns, you have found it."
Olivier Borgeaud kindly asked Sequentia Legenda two questions 🎤
Olivier Borgeaud: "How does your become a musician in such a specialized field?"
Sequentia Legenda: "Music has always been a part of my life. When I was eight years old, my parents, who were looking for fun activities, enrolled me in accordion lessons. But I was reluctant to read music. It was Klaus Schulze's discovery of Mirage that was my real musical trigger. I was 16 years old, so it was a real revelation! I had only one idea left in my mind, to make music and not just any music: soaring music, cosmic music. It is in my parents' cellar that I installed my first home studio, which consists of an arsenal of analog synthesizers. When the MIDI standard came along, I traded my instruments for digital machines. More recently, I have used virtual synthesizers as work tools. And finally, five years ago, I put my work in the light of day with my first album BLUE DREAM. During these five years, I had the pleasure of being able to share my own vision of the Berlin School."

Olivier Borgeaud: "In which milieu/stage do you perform, and what is the audience's feedback on a style of music they don't really know? In the sense that during your last concert, it seems to me that most of the participants were more there as accustomed to the place than as electro enthusiasts?"
Sequentia Legenda: "It is true that I usually perform in places frequented by electronic music lovers. This was the case in Nantes during the Synthfest, which is the essential French event for synthesizer enthusiasts. I have also performed in front of a smaller circle of real connoisseurs at a private concert. In Chexbres, it was different and at the same time a new experience. While it is true that some people had come especially for our visit, the majority present knew little about this style of music and did not know it. Before the concert, I therefore took the time to go back to the origins of the Berlin School and briefly explain this musical style. At the end of the concert, I heard a few bits of discussion here and there: "It's a surprising and immersive music..." or "It sounds a little like Jean-Michel Jarre...". For me, it is interesting and instructive to present my musical vision to initiates as well as to a wider audience."
