Synchronicité musicale : Michael Scanlon et Sequentia Legenda

Quand la musique ouvre le dialogue :
rencontre avec Michael Scanlon

Michael Scanlon and his entire collection of Sequentia Legenda albums

Laurent Schieber – Sequentia Legenda

MIKE SCANLON :

BLUE DREAM Sequentia Legenda

LE PREMIER CD DE SEQUENTIA LEGENDA
QUE J’AI ACHETÉ : BLUE DREAM
Lorsque j’ai entendu FLY OVER ME pour la première fois,

A RAY OF LIGHT by Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

L’UNIVERS EST UNE SOURCE INFINIE D’INSPIRATION

Musical Synchronicity: Michael Scanlon and Sequentia Legenda

When music opens dialogue:
meeting with Michael Scanlon

Michael Scanlon and his entire collection of Sequentia Legenda albums

Music and art sometimes create unexpected synchronicities

Dear friends-listeners,

Michael Scanlon, a passionate listener and London-based writer inspired by metaphysics, discovered my musical vision only recently… and within a few days, all of my compositions had found a full place in his inner world.

From this encounter, a simple and authentic conversation was born. He first shared his impressions with me, then asked three questions to which I responded with what lives within me: memory, sound, and the vibration of the living.

Here is the fruit of this heart-to-heart dialogue, which I invite you to discover.

If you too feel the desire to share a moment of exchange centered around music, please do not hesitate to contact me — it will be my great pleasure.

With all my gratitude and light,
Laurent Schieber – Sequentia Legenda

Michael Scanlon and his entire collection of Sequentia Legenda albums

MIKE SCANLON :
Every Sequentia Legenda album is unique
and irreplaceable

My name is Michael Scanlon and I live in London. I have been married thirty six years and have two grown up children. Before I retired I worked as a librarian in research bodies and Government departments.

I am also the author of several books inspired by metaphysics. My pen name is Michael Joseph Scanlon

I love music a lot and am so happy with Bandcamp for telling me about the music of Sequentia Legenda. Berlin School music is an essential part of my music listening and I am absolutely delighted to hear the music of Sequentia Legenda.

SL: What inspires you most in my music, and what feelings or sensations does it evoke for you?
MS: The best of the Berlin School is probably the most evocative rock music of all the different genres. Sequentia Legenda’s music scores heavily in this regard, as it so mesmerising and ethereal. The combination of the layered synthesisers and the use of sequencers create an atmosphere that is greater than the sum of its parts. Every Sequentia Legenda album is unique and irreplaceable in this regard. They are all so ambient, yet so invitingly beautiful.

BLUE DREAM by Sequentia Legenda

THE FIRST SEQUENTIA LEGENDA CD
I EVER BOUGHT WAS BLUE DREAM
When I heard FLY OVER ME for the first time I was transfixed

SL: Are there albums or specific pieces of mine that have touched you particularly deeply, and why?
MS: The first Sequentia Legenda cd I ever bought was BLUE DREAM. When I heard FLY OVER ME for the first time I was transfixed. Indeed, not long after, my Sequentia Legenda collection went from one cd to fourteen very quickly. I was disappointed by none of them. In fact, I was astonished that the excellent quality of
BLUE DREAM was matched by all of the rest of Sequentia Legenda’s discography, without repetition or rehashing.

SL: How do you experience the connection between the music and the visual design of my albums—does this unity affect how you listen and feel the music?
MS: For me, the packaging of rock music is an essential part of its art. Accordingly, I don’t do downloads. Sequentia Legenda’s covers are an integral part of the whole Sequentia Legenda experience. I love them all.

A RAY OF LIGHT by Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

THE UNIVERSE IS AN INFINITE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
My music is a way of coming into resonance

MS: Stars and galaxies obviously inspire you and your music. Do you believe that there is a cause to the Universe, or did it just happen?
LS: The Universe is an infinite source of inspiration — it is the All, the Great Whole. I do not believe that we are, or have ever been, alone. Everything is vibration, and vibration is energy — and energy is life.

For me, the Universe did not “simply appear.” It is the expression of a vast intelligence, a living consciousness endowed with unconditional love, connecting all beings and all worlds. My music is a way of coming into resonance with that cosmic breath, of translating something that goes beyond us, yet vibrates and lives within each of us.

MS: Do you use old synths in your music or do you prefer the modern ones?
LS: When I was 16, my studio was set up in my parents’ basement, and to me it felt like Ali Baba’s cave. At the heart of it stood the magnificent Korg PS-3200 modular, surrounded by the MS-20 and its little brother, the SQ-10. On my left I had the Oberheim Duo Two Voice, and on my right the Multiman S and the ARP Odyssey.

With the arrival of MIDI, digital synthesizers gradually replaced those beautiful analog machines — instruments such as the Roland JD800, the Waldorf Microwave or the Korg DSS1.

For more than ten years now, I have been working exclusively with virtual synthesizers, like the Arturia collection. I feel totally at ease with them. They allow me to rediscover sensations I once had, while offering freedom and fluidity in the creative process.

For me, the heart always comes before the technology. Music remains, above all else, a sharing from heart to heart.

MS: How did you come up with the name Sequentia Legenda?
LS: I initially had a long list of possible names, and in the end Sequentia Legenda emerged as a blend of two of them. There was also a beautiful synchronicity in the fact that the initials S and L are my own.

To me, the name perfectly reflects the spirit of my musical vision. Since the sequencer is still my preferred tool for composition, “Sequentia” felt natural to me. “Legenda” evokes memory, mystery and timelessness.

And perhaps legends are, in truth, simply veiled forms of reality?

At the end of our exchange, Michael made a very specific request:
“Laurent, could you one day put together a clear chronology of your discography? I believe it would be valuable for us listeners, to follow the evolution of your universe.”

I found this suggestion both thoughtful and relevant, and I am grateful for it. May these milestones serve as a guide for those who wish to journey through my sounds — step by step, album after album.

ALCYONE under Paul Rijken’s spotlight

"ALCYONE is an album of absolute excellent
Berlin School electronic music
with great sequencing and wonderful soundsculptures.
This music is deep, uplifting and utterly beautiful.
"
Paul Rijkens (Reviewer for the Dutch magazine iO Pages)

ALCYONE Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music
Thanks to Paul Rijkens for this photo

ALCYONE under Paul Rijken’s spotlight
Topic: The album

Paul Rijkens: Alcyone comes out of the Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Aeolus and the wife of Ceyx. She drowned herself in grief when Ceyx died and was transformed into a kingfisher. She was also called Halcyone.

Where did your idea or inspiration come from to use Alcyone as concept for this album?

Sequentia Legenda:
In fact, ALCYONE represents the Great Central Sun, which is the theme of my album. A year ago, ALCYONE came to me like a bolt from the blue, and I felt it was essential to express this energy, this elevation emanating from the Great Central Sun, musically. Everyone is free to choose whether or not to embrace it, everyone is free to do their own research and to be discerning, especially in these current times.

For me, it was natural and important to decode and transcribe what I perceived so that I could share and offer the best of myself, both humanly and musically. It was obvious to follow my heart, to share this fabulous energy, this luminous force, this vibrant joy, this infinite hope.

ALCYONE is all that 🙏☀️🙏

Track 1: Around The Great Central Sun
Paul: The sun is all. The sun is everything. Without the sun, earth and the humans cannot survive. It is one of your most joyful compositions, you state in the booklet.

How did you come with the idea of the sun for a track ?

Sequentia Legenda:
It was the logical continuation of ALCYONE, I had to highlight this radiant and loving alignment, this incredible creative power literally breathed into me by the Great Central Sun. The more I progressed with this composition, the more the atmosphere of joy grew, much to my delight - it was quite indescribable, in fact. In the end, all I know is that, in my opinion, it's the 'happiest' track in my discography.

Around The Great Central Sun is a message of Peace, Hope and Love, an invitation to gravitate freely in an atmosphere bathed in a divine light and in a creative benevolence. It's a cosmic dance around this fabulous Great Central Sun for a spiritual elevation.

Track 2: The Ring Of Golden Light

Paul: Gold is one of the most precious and valuable materials in the world. Light of gold must also be very precious.

Did you feel surrounded by it when you composed this track?

Sequentia Legenda: I felt surrounded, guided and transcended by a gentle, benevolent emanation that exhaled my creativity
Gratitude🙏

The idea of this composition is to take the listener towards the ring of golden light of an ascending spiral to reach high and beneficial vibrations. The soundscape is a bit like a nebula bathed in a soft, regenerative light. Everyone is free to make up their own mind, to find their own path to exaltation.

Track 3: Bon Voyage

Paul: It means have a good journey or vacation.

Do you consider yourself being on a voyage yourself when you create
your music?

Sequentia Legenda: In a way, yes, there are similarities. When I'm composing, I'm living in my own world, disconnected from our reality so to speak, travelling in my own reality. Time no longer has a hold on me, it's a notion that disappears completely, giving way to a delightful timelessness conducive to creativity. With Bon Voyage, I hope listeners will be able to travel freely and serenely in their own reality.

Track 4: Love Feeds Love
Paul: A for Sequentia Legenda short track. The sequence is fantasic.

What means love to you? How do you make this?

Sequentia Legenda: Thank you Paul for that compliment. It's not really my habit to do short tracks and this is the shortest in my discography. I have to say that this composition literally "invited" itself! In fact, it was planned from the outset that ALCYONE would consist of three tracks, as almost all my albums do. Then, spontaneously, a pressing need arose to rework an initial part. It was a bit like an initiation experience, something that upset the schedule. This composition developed with disconcerting fluidity, as if to persuade me to incorporate this unexpected title. I was really excited by the result, so I decided to add a fourth track, "Love Feeds Love".

In the end, that's how I see Love, in sharing.

Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

ALCYONE under Paul Rijken’s spotlight
Topic: Equipment

Paul Rijkens: I am very interested in synthesizers and everything around them. You use mostly software synths. Arturia has created brilliant software emulations of classic synths.

Why have you chosen for this and not for hardware?

Sequentia Legenda:
I have to say that when I was between 16 and 21, in my parents' basement, I had a room full of analogue synthesizers, such as the Korg PS 3200, the ARP Odyssey and the Oberheim Two Voices, to name but a few.

Later, with the advent of the MIDI standard, I parted company with these for a large number of digital synths accompanied by Cubase software. Then, like many of us, there were changes in my life and for a while I only kept the Korg DSS1 and the Roland JD800.

Then, a little over ten years ago, I discovered virtual synths and really enjoyed composing with them. Finally, looking back, I've realised that before hardware and everything else: it's the heart that's most important in sharing with listeners. It's my experience, my feelings, of course. I think that my basic knowledge of subtractive synthesis, for example, allows me to approach VST technology with a certain ease and a very precise vision of what I want to highlight. I have to say that overall I'm satisfied.

ALCYONE under Paul Rijken’s spotlight
Topic: Live

Paul Rijkens: I would love to see you play live.

Is there a chance you will perform here in The Netherlands on the E-live of E-day festival?

Sequentia Legenda:
Thank you, that's very kind of you. Performing live is something very special, it's a new adventure every time, both technically and on a human level. There's the meeting with the audience, that special contact that makes it a unique moment in itself.

I was lucky enough to be able to play live during 2019, accompanied by German drummer Tommy Betzler (who himself accompanied Klaus Schulze in the mid-80s) in France, Switzerland and Germany.
I have fond memories of that.

As far as future concerts are concerned, it's possible that I'll be able to perform in the Netherlands, and I'd be delighted to do so. Ron Boots and I have been in touch and we'll see what happens. Tommy would also be up for this new adventure on stage. I've got a few imperatives in my life at the moment which mean I can't give you any precise dates. In any case, if it's not possible this year, I hope it'll be next year.

Presentation: My name is Paul Rijkens.

I come from The Netherlands and live in the beautiful ancient inner city of Alkmaar, the city of cheese.

In daily life I work for the Ministry Of Justice. My hobby is music. I love The Beatles and am a volunteer in the Beatles Museum in Alkmaar. My biggest musical love is progressive rock, especially that with (lots of) keyboards in it. I also love electronic music and even tried to make it myself a long time ago. Sine many years I have a weakness for the so-called “Berlin School of electronic music” and that is one of the reasons that I feel so drawn to the music of Sequentia Legenda. Ever since the early eighties, I write about progressive rock and electronic music: I do interviews and write reviews of albums and concerts. In the old days I did that for magazines like Sonic Report, KLEM magazine, E-dition and SI Music Magazine, nowadays I write for the Dutch magazine iO Pages in which I am called the electronic music specialist.

MY VISION FOR THE BERLIN SCHOOL IN 2023
A heart to heart sharing

I had the great pleasure to share with you my last opus, I will try here to reveal you some aspects from behind the scenes.

ALCYONE represents for me a beautiful adventure, rich in human, spiritual and musical experiences of course. It is a setting in light, the term is appropriate, on the continuum of my musical vision.

As you may know, my music is now tuned to the frequency of 432 Hz in order to offer the purest sound worlds possible. My goal with this new creation is to continue my heart-to-heart sharing, to infuse more and more serenity in order to help you better radiate your own wholeness.

I have to say that the composition phases have unfolded overall with a pleasant fluidity. Gratitude. I wanted through the various universes composing this album, in the structural form, in the color of the harmonies, in the choice of the timbres, to deliver a connection which is the most in adequacy with my feeling. I wished a sound matter the most favourable to dreams, which is at the same time rich and ethereal and comfortable to the listening. To lay down notes tinged with light that could evoke the freedom between the dimensions of a journey that could be relived each time and in a totally personal way.

I hope that ALCYONE and its four sound universes will accompany you during your astral and immersive peregrinations, arousing in you for a long time beautiful and sweet emotions.

I wish you lots of listening pleasure.

Three Astral Arches by Sequentia Legenda

Dear listeners,

I am pleased to announce that my new album "
CELESTIAL" is being finalised. A new musical adventure is coming to fruition, where challenges, surprises and hardships had to be faced.

With this new opus, I tried to get out of my comfort zone a bit.
The album consists of three tracks: "
Three Astral Arches", "Symphonic Dawn of the Stars" and "VOICES 55".

CELESTIAL by Sequentia Legenda

CELESTIAL
Three Astral Arches

The first track "Three Astral Arches" is almost finished.
It is a richly pigmented sound painting with a spiritual and mystical framework and atmosphere, created with the instrumental palette of analogue synths.

With a duration of 23:23, the three parts "Yasna", "Feldi" and "Jerrish" follow one another, each delivering their own atmospheres to dress this sound painting with a mystical patina and reinforcing the resonance of the harmonic tones.

The introduction is rather confusing
– I'll leave you with the surprise – it is built with effects from the AKS and ARP Odyssey mainly. The chords of the string instruments and the choirs unfold, gradually giving way to the different sequences that make up the rhythmic framework. The cymbals then reinforce the tempo. The velvety string ensembles of the famous Solina emerge in the distance to distil melodic lines here and there supported by subtle reverberation. The climax is reached with the addition of further drum elements to make way for the ethereal and spiritual finale consisting of choirs, effects, and a lulling of various crystalline sequences.

CELESTIAL by Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

CELESTIAL
Entrance Into New Horizon

Dear listeners,

I am very pleased to announce that the work on my next opus "CELESTIAL" is progressing in a positive way, both musically and in terms of layout, giving me pleasure and satisfaction. The result corresponds to the idea that had germinated a few months earlier in my mind, it is the reflection of what I wish to communicate emotionally and artistically.
A new experience, a new sharing, that I will have the pleasure of presenting and bringing to light on September 21, 2021, the date of the album's release.

"CELESTIAL" is a symbiosis of different mythical instruments, all of them coming from the analogue era, such as the EMS Synthi AKS, the Moog modular, the ARP Odyssey, to name but a few. It's true that at the moment I use almost only virtual instruments, but these are carefully selected to match the analogue sound grain so typical of the mid-70s. I would also like to add that it is the turn of the fabulous Korg PS-3300 modular to join the set of analogue synthesizers. This is a first. This modular offers a wide sound palette and a great harmonic density: a "big" sound. I had a lot of fun working with this remarkable and truly unique instrument. I would like to add that when I was between 18 and 20 years old, I bought the Korg PS-3200 the "little brother" of the PS-3300 modular. I would like to take this opportunity to say a BIG thank you again to my father who helped me financially. I can invite you to discover a little more about the history of the encounter between the PS-3200 and myself by reading the blog article.
