Synchronicité musicale : Michael Scanlon et Sequentia Legenda

Quand la musique ouvre le dialogue :
rencontre avec Michael Scanlon

Michael Scanlon and his entire collection of Sequentia Legenda albums

Laurent Schieber – Sequentia Legenda

MIKE SCANLON :

BLUE DREAM Sequentia Legenda

LE PREMIER CD DE SEQUENTIA LEGENDA
QUE J’AI ACHETÉ : BLUE DREAM
Lorsque j’ai entendu FLY OVER ME pour la première fois,

A RAY OF LIGHT by Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

L’UNIVERS EST UNE SOURCE INFINIE D’INSPIRATION

Musical Synchronicity: Michael Scanlon and Sequentia Legenda

When music opens dialogue:
meeting with Michael Scanlon

Michael Scanlon and his entire collection of Sequentia Legenda albums

Music and art sometimes create unexpected synchronicities

Dear friends-listeners,

Michael Scanlon, a passionate listener and London-based writer inspired by metaphysics, discovered my musical vision only recently… and within a few days, all of my compositions had found a full place in his inner world.

From this encounter, a simple and authentic conversation was born. He first shared his impressions with me, then asked three questions to which I responded with what lives within me: memory, sound, and the vibration of the living.

Here is the fruit of this heart-to-heart dialogue, which I invite you to discover.

If you too feel the desire to share a moment of exchange centered around music, please do not hesitate to contact me — it will be my great pleasure.

With all my gratitude and light,
Laurent Schieber – Sequentia Legenda

MIKE SCANLON :
Every Sequentia Legenda album is unique
and irreplaceable

My name is Michael Scanlon and I live in London. I have been married thirty six years and have two grown up children. Before I retired I worked as a librarian in research bodies and Government departments.

I am also the author of several books inspired by metaphysics. My pen name is Michael Joseph Scanlon

I love music a lot and am so happy with Bandcamp for telling me about the music of Sequentia Legenda. Berlin School music is an essential part of my music listening and I am absolutely delighted to hear the music of Sequentia Legenda.

SL: What inspires you most in my music, and what feelings or sensations does it evoke for you?
MS: The best of the Berlin School is probably the most evocative rock music of all the different genres. Sequentia Legenda’s music scores heavily in this regard, as it so mesmerising and ethereal. The combination of the layered synthesisers and the use of sequencers create an atmosphere that is greater than the sum of its parts. Every Sequentia Legenda album is unique and irreplaceable in this regard. They are all so ambient, yet so invitingly beautiful.

BLUE DREAM by Sequentia Legenda

THE FIRST SEQUENTIA LEGENDA CD
I EVER BOUGHT WAS BLUE DREAM
When I heard FLY OVER ME for the first time I was transfixed

SL: Are there albums or specific pieces of mine that have touched you particularly deeply, and why?
MS: The first Sequentia Legenda cd I ever bought was BLUE DREAM. When I heard FLY OVER ME for the first time I was transfixed. Indeed, not long after, my Sequentia Legenda collection went from one cd to fourteen very quickly. I was disappointed by none of them. In fact, I was astonished that the excellent quality of
BLUE DREAM was matched by all of the rest of Sequentia Legenda’s discography, without repetition or rehashing.

SL: How do you experience the connection between the music and the visual design of my albums—does this unity affect how you listen and feel the music?
MS: For me, the packaging of rock music is an essential part of its art. Accordingly, I don’t do downloads. Sequentia Legenda’s covers are an integral part of the whole Sequentia Legenda experience. I love them all.

A RAY OF LIGHT by Sequentia Legenda Berlin School music

THE UNIVERSE IS AN INFINITE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
My music is a way of coming into resonance

MS: Stars and galaxies obviously inspire you and your music. Do you believe that there is a cause to the Universe, or did it just happen?
LS: The Universe is an infinite source of inspiration — it is the All, the Great Whole. I do not believe that we are, or have ever been, alone. Everything is vibration, and vibration is energy — and energy is life.

For me, the Universe did not “simply appear.” It is the expression of a vast intelligence, a living consciousness endowed with unconditional love, connecting all beings and all worlds. My music is a way of coming into resonance with that cosmic breath, of translating something that goes beyond us, yet vibrates and lives within each of us.

MS: Do you use old synths in your music or do you prefer the modern ones?
LS: When I was 16, my studio was set up in my parents’ basement, and to me it felt like Ali Baba’s cave. At the heart of it stood the magnificent Korg PS-3200 modular, surrounded by the MS-20 and its little brother, the SQ-10. On my left I had the Oberheim Duo Two Voice, and on my right the Multiman S and the ARP Odyssey.

With the arrival of MIDI, digital synthesizers gradually replaced those beautiful analog machines — instruments such as the Roland JD800, the Waldorf Microwave or the Korg DSS1.

For more than ten years now, I have been working exclusively with virtual synthesizers, like the Arturia collection. I feel totally at ease with them. They allow me to rediscover sensations I once had, while offering freedom and fluidity in the creative process.

For me, the heart always comes before the technology. Music remains, above all else, a sharing from heart to heart.

MS: How did you come up with the name Sequentia Legenda?
LS: I initially had a long list of possible names, and in the end Sequentia Legenda emerged as a blend of two of them. There was also a beautiful synchronicity in the fact that the initials S and L are my own.

To me, the name perfectly reflects the spirit of my musical vision. Since the sequencer is still my preferred tool for composition, “Sequentia” felt natural to me. “Legenda” evokes memory, mystery and timelessness.

And perhaps legends are, in truth, simply veiled forms of reality?

At the end of our exchange, Michael made a very specific request:
“Laurent, could you one day put together a clear chronology of your discography? I believe it would be valuable for us listeners, to follow the evolution of your universe.”

I found this suggestion both thoughtful and relevant, and I am grateful for it. May these milestones serve as a guide for those who wish to journey through my sounds — step by step, album after album.

🎼 The sequencer my favorite tool 📶

My vision of sequencing: loops in perpetual evolution

Sequentia Legenda and the sequencer Korg SQ10

My first sequencer was the Korg SQ-10

I had made its acquisition during a trip to Paris may be some time after I bought the
Korg MS-20
. The two "brothers" lived together for my greatest happiness in my home studio in my parents' basement. Together with the tape echo chamber RE201 Roland, I made my debut by developing my sequences. The setting up of the loops with the SQ-10 was really complete and intuitive. For example, it was interesting to modulate filters and envelopes by generating three different voltages at the same time. The 3 channels, the 12 steps and the 6 modes were for the time a beautiful technical prowess that I could enjoy.

Sequentia Legenda and the sequencer

Oberheim's mini sequencer

Another instrument, the Oberheim Two Voice had a mini sequencer. Despite its eight programming steps available, the mini sequencer was convenient and pleasant for a fast search of small sequential lines.

Berlin school music analog sequencer
TVS1, the official model name of the 1974/75 Oberheim 2 voice or OB2 / ob-2 (obie two)

Here too, the association of the Oberheim with the echo chamber RE201 Roland made the result convincing and interesting.

Sequentia Legenda and the sequencer

Today, I work with virtual instruments

VST's allow me to express myself completely and freely. Sometimes I use various sources to create my loops, such for example as the Moog Modular sequencer from Arturia.

Sequentia Legenda and the sequencer

The sequences come to life

In addition to the search for tones, I attach great importance to the symbiosis of the different sequential loops. I particularly like to make them live and grow all along a track to make them sometimes even "organic". The complementarity of the sequences is also an element that is particularly close to my heart.
The sequences can be used as a structure and/or as the main and/or secondary
melodic line.

As far as the creation itself is concerned, it can do this by working on the parameters and potentiometers of a sequencer, or after having plated some pads chords that evoke my creativity and thus favour the realization of a loop, the reverse is also possible. I have also created note by note a sequence.

👦 I remember an anecdote when I was 16-17 years old and a sequence came to mind. I had phoned home, my youngest sister took the handset and asked her to take our tape recorder to record me. I then sang the loop of notes to save it on the cassette so that I could in the evening work on my analogue instruments of the time. 📼

The sequences can be fast or slow, shiny or deep, come and go, random, pizzicato or legato. They can also metamorphose, literally play the role of drums and be percussive. They are the fundamentals of my music. Whether it is with the instruments of yesteryear or today, I still have so much pleasure in sculpting and modelling loops. For me, the synthesizer and sequencer are inseparable.

My vision of sequencing: loops in perpetual evolution

Sequentia Legenda and the sequencer

Berlin School pioneers Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream

In terms of reference, I would like to quote the Berlin School pioneers Klaus Schulze and the mythical band Tangerine Dream. I keep in mind my first listenings of the Mirage album with absolutely remarkable and timeless sequences. Crystal Lake obviously will remain for me a key moment in my musical approach, however I would like to point out that in the title Velvet Voyage, which is in my eyes more aerial, more cosmic, hides one of the most sumptuous sequences, so simple and so strong in terms of emotion. Congratulations!

For Tangerine Dream are the Rubycon and Ricochet albums that had marked me with their sequences with their characteristic timbre.

Sequentia Legenda and the sequencer

Testimonial Yves Blanc (La Planète Bleue)

«Most of the spacey music is made of three components : synth pads, sequencer loops and (sometimes annoying) solos. Sequentia Legenda is intelligent and sensitive enough to create his - strictly instrumental - music with the first two components only:
the pads and the loops.
»

Laurent Schieber (Sequentia Legenda) and Yves Blanc (La Planète Bleue)

«In his spacey compositions, where light meets minimalism, and fitted to dream and meditation, there is no room for flashy solo, no room for protruding showing-off,
instead the space is filled with highly sophisticated pads, perpetually changing and loops, themselves shaped in ever-changing patterns, sometimes highly complex,
even if they often seem obvious

Yves Blanc (La Planète Bleue)

👍ETHEREAL in the Top Ten at the Schallwelle Awards

It is an honour for me to be able to appear alongside Tangerine Dream,
Johannes Schmoelling and Mike Oldfield in this ranking.
I am delighted to know that my music is appreciated and recognized in Germany,
the country of the Berliner Schule.
